Pursuit for Courage
Johnathan Hunt, Grade 7, Army National Guard (disabled /retired veteran)
The idea of courage can have different meanings and interpretations. What exactly does courage mean? Is it simply about being brave? Is it about taking risks or stepping out of our comfort zone? Courage can be connected to bravery, taking risks, or venturing beyond our comfort zones.
In my family, courage is best defined as the inner strength that enabled my parents to confront any challenges head-on. Both of them are veterans who have faced their own struggles. I witness their daily battles, the pain and sorrow reflected in their eyes. Although they may not frequently discuss their wounds or scars, they possess the courage to rise from their beds and face each day with determination.
They demonstrate courage by attending appointments, engaging in activities like fishing to find solace, and maintaining a positive outlook. If my father hadn’t summoned the courage to pursue my mother, I wouldn’t be here today. Their enduring marriage is a testament to their shared courage in seeking marriage counseling. Above all, their commitment to Jesus Christ has played a pivotal role in overcoming their alcohol problem.
Courage takes on various forms, often requiring individuals to step outside their comfort zones and seek assistance. It empowers them to embrace challenges and discomfort, not only for their personal growth but also for the sake of their loved ones, like me. I am genuinely grateful for the veteran programs that have supported them on this journey, enabling them to find happiness and redefine their perspectives.
Courage is more than just being brave. True courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the ability to act in spite of it, demonstrating resilience and determination in the face of uncertainty. Their pursuit for courage has allowed them to achieve what may have initially seemed impossible. Lastly, if there’s one invaluable lesson my parents have taught me, is that courage involves confronting one’s fears and persevering, regardless of the circumstances.
