The Big Move

By: Ava El-Khoury

Aubrey was scared. Her family was going to move from her home in Washington all the way to Germany. She knew she was a military child, but she’d never made this big of a move before. Her whole life she had lived in the U.S., she had never lived overseas. Plus, she would have to leave her best friend Sara behind. Aubrey loved her school and her teachers. She didn’t want change to come. “Bree! Time to come down for dinner.” Her problems would have to wait. Maybe she should tell her mom what she thought about the move. “She would never listen,”she told herself, as she walked down the stairs.

The next day at school, her last day before moving, she told her teachers and classmates she was going to leave. It was the hardest to tell Sara, they had always been together since 3rd grade when they had met. “Hey,” Aubrey said to Sara quietly, “I want to talk to you about something.” ” I already know what you want to say,” Sara said crossly,” You’re leaving, and you’ll never come back.” She stormed away Aubrey and didn’t talk to her for the rest of the day.

“How was your last day, dear?” Aubrey’s mom asked her daughter. “Not well,” Aubrey replied, “Sara refused to talk to me because I’m moving and never going to see her again.” “That’s not true,” her mother told her,”You can visit Sara whenever you would like.” “Well, I don’t think Sara wants to be friends anymore.” “Why don’t you text her and find out for sure?” “Okay, Mom, I’ll try.”
I don’t want to move.” Aubrey texted to Sara. “My mom says we can visit each other.” It takes a while but Sara finally responds. “Go, we can be friends online. Don’t forget to send me pics.

The next day arrived before Aubrey could even think about it. This was the day Aubrey and her family would board the plane to Germany. Before leaving the house for the last time, Aubrey walked to Sara’s house to say “goodbye”. “I’ll miss you Sara,” she said when she left, “and no matter what happens we will continue our friendship for years to come.” Soon she was on the plane, flying over the ocean to Germany.

Germany turned out better than Aubrey expected. Her new school was just as good as the old one and she had new friends, Amy and Michelle, and she even had a boyfriend named Charlie. Her house was bigger than the one she had in Washington and she was starting to learn some German. She had many adventures in Germany, and never forgot to text Sara when cool things happened. During her summer break, she visited Sara in Washington. They made each other “BFF” bracelets so they would never forget their friendship. After Germany came Japan, and no matter where the military took her family, she would always have courage.
