The official definition of courage is “without fear”. To a military child courage means to be brave, kind, and respectful. Not only do military kids have the trait of courage, you need courage to be a member of any part of the Army.

Are you a military kid? If you are, you know there are lots of pros and cons to being a military child. Imagine being only eleven years old and going to four different elementary schools across the United States. You have to be courageous to endure this amount of change. Courage isn’t just a feeling, it’s an action.

Personally one of my favorite memories was when my dad got promoted. My mom and brother got to pin his rank. We had a great time. We got a picture and went home. Here’s our picture!

One hard thing about military life is moving. Leaving your friends is really difficult. You don’t know what your house or neighborhood will be like. What about the kids, are they kind or mean? Here’s where courage comes in, the hard things are just things, how you deal with it is what matters .

Life as a military kid can be mentally painful. Speaking to others who have parents that have deployed can be very challenging. There is always the worry that your parents won’t come home or they may be injured. This is why courage is important to a military kid. I often remind my friends to believe that everything will be fine.

I’m not going to tell you that I love everything about being a military kid, but I do love the experience. I especially love the people I meet along the way. One thing all military kids have in common is courage. If you have courage you have kindness. Kindness is not just handed to you, you must be kind first. Someone wise told me what goes around comes around.
